Pallets for heavy export loads

A heavy load requires a specified support system, not a heavier-sounding pallet name. Record the gross mass, centre of gravity and contact points before considering a construction. A supplier needs to understand whether the load is spread over the deck or concentrated into a few feet.

Start with the actual load

The requirements to settle first

Describe every support condition: floor, forks, rack beams and any intermediate handling. A design suitable on the floor may behave differently when supported across a span. Obtain competent confirmation for the actual assembly; do not use a general internet kilogram figure.

An illustrative planning example

A machine of a given mass and a uniform block of the same mass can impose different stresses. Provide a drawing of the feet and any anchoring points. If restraints connect to the base, include their requirements in the design review.

Information for the supplier

Cargo mass; contact-point drawing; centre of gravity; support spans; lifting and restraint plan. Give dimensions in millimetres and distinguish product weight from the gross packed weight. Include the quantity and a drawing or loading plan where available. Identify which requirements are mandatory and where you want the supplier to propose an option.

ISPM 15 and the complete packing assembly

For an export movement using regulated raw-wood packaging, confirm the applicable treatment and marking. Include timber blocks, collars, cases and dunnage added during packing. A pallet specification does not certify the cargo or replace destination, customer or handling requirements. Check the final assembly before dispatch, particularly if anything has changed after the order.

Discuss supply and delivery

Contact the team with the specification, delivery postcode, unloading equipment and the date pallets are needed for packing. New or used condition, exact construction, availability, price and delivery are confirmed against the enquiry. For repeat requirements, describe the expected frequency and how specification changes will be controlled.
