Put the requirement in the purchase specification
UK guidance says solid wood packaging used to import goods into Great Britain must meet the applicable ISPM 15 requirements. Specify packaging expectations with the overseas exporter rather than discovering its choice of pallets after the goods have been loaded. Northern Ireland movements need separate consideration.
Ask about the entire packing method
Your supplier may purchase the base from one business and add timber supports during packing. Ask for the whole arrangement, including dunnage and case framing. If relying on an exemption for processed material, confirm that the construction actually fits that description.
Obtain useful evidence before departure
Ask for photographs showing the completed packaging and readable marks, linked to the shipment reference. This is a commercial check, not a guarantee of inspection clearance. If something looks questionable, resolve it with the supplier and the relevant advisers before freight departure.
Plan for a query
Non-compliant packaging may be rejected or destroyed, requiring other arrangements for the goods. Clarify the response and commercial responsibilities in advance. Keep the importer, supplier and freight agent aligned on the current shipment information rather than passing around incomplete descriptions.
Pallets bought for onward export
Imported pallets reused for another shipment require a fresh assessment of their current condition, any alterations and the new route. Do not assume that entry on an earlier shipment establishes every future use. Keep questioned or repaired units separate until the appropriate provider has resolved their status.
