Treatment

Heat treated vs kiln dried pallets

Separate plant-health treatment from moisture control when specifying pallets for export.

Two purchasing requirements

Heat treatment concerns a specified treatment process. Kiln drying concerns the removal of moisture. The same equipment may be involved, but the descriptions answer different questions. If you need both, write both into the specification and ask the supplier to confirm what is included in the offered pallet.

When moisture deserves its own specification

Consider the cargo as well as the pallet. Cartons, paper, metal components and other moisture-sensitive goods may need a packing plan that manages condensation and damp storage. A dry pallet alone does not manage every source of moisture in a container. Discuss wrapping, ventilation, storage time and the overall packing method with your logistics or packaging specialist.

Ask for a measurable agreement

Instead of requesting “very dry” pallets, explain the intended use and ask the supplier which moisture condition they can supply and verify. Agree the measurement method and any acceptance criteria before ordering. Do not adopt a universal moisture target from an unrelated product or assume a reading from one board describes every part of a pallet load.

Protect the delivery condition

Keep pallets in a suitable storage area after delivery. Inspect for wetness, visible mould and damage before placing sensitive cargo on them. Record a delivery concern promptly with clear photographs and the order reference. Leaving pallets exposed and then expecting their original delivery condition to remain unchanged creates avoidable disputes.

Write two requirements when you need two outcomes

A buyer can require compliant heat treatment and a defined moisture condition. Put them on separate lines of the purchasing specification. For moisture, agree the acceptance method, sampling, measurement location and any packaging or storage expectations. A bare request for “dry pallets” is open to different interpretations.

For heat treatment, establish the required treatment and marking for the movement. For the load itself, record carton, paper, metal or other sensitivities. That allows the supplier and packing team to address moisture as a shipment-design issue rather than expecting the HT code to answer it.

Why a dry pallet can become wet again

Storage and transport conditions continue to matter after manufacture or treatment. Pallets exposed to rain, ground moisture or humid environments can change condition before use. Enclosing moisture-sensitive goods in wrap or a container introduces further packing considerations.

Inspect near the point of use, not only when stock arrives. If a reading matters to customer acceptance, record it according to the agreed procedure and identify the pallet batch. Where a moisture-control packing system is needed, obtain a suitable design rather than guessing quantities of desiccant or relying on ventilation alone.
