A date is not the whole decision
A buyer should assess reuse through the applicable requirements, the packaging’s history and its current condition. Do not assume that a pallet needs renewal simply because it is old, or that a recent mark guarantees suitability. Changes, repairs, infestation concerns and the destination can matter more than the calendar.
Unchanged packaging versus altered packaging
UK guidance allows reuse of compliant packaging that remains suitable and has not been altered in a way that requires further action. Repairs and remanufacture bring specific requirements into play. Ask the authorised provider about the actual change rather than using a general expiry rule to decide.
Storage can change condition
Treatment is not ongoing pest protection. Keep export stock identifiable and inspect it before use. Look for damage, contamination and signs of infestation, and isolate questioned units. A pallet stored outside or returned from another site may need a different condition assessment from an untouched delivery.
Customer rules can be separate
A customer may impose condition, traceability or age-related purchasing requirements beyond the general wood-packaging standard. Ask for those in writing and include them in the order. A pallet can satisfy one requirement yet fail the customer’s separate acceptance criteria, so confirm both before dispatch.
